today’s daily water is written by Heather Pasley

“For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on the earth is named.” (Ephesians 3:14-15)

For those of us over the age of 40, we can easily conjur up the memory of the Folgers’ commercial where the college student is dropped off at his front door step with his bags and the landscape is covered in snow. He quietly slips into the house just at dawn and is greeted by his baby sister. They begin to make a pot of coffee. The aroma fills the air and drifts up to the bedrooms where the rest of the family lay sleeping in their warm beds. They awaken to the enticing coffee smell and makes their way down the stairs to find their Christmas surprise….their son is HOME. The best part of waking up…….and you can finish that jingle. BUT what is the best part of waking up?

For so many this time of year brings about joy and family and warmth but for others it is full of anxiety and painful memories. Admittedly, I drift between both of these depending on the day. When the commercial first aired in the 80s, I remember thinking how wonderful it would have been to have had my Mother greet me when I returned HOME from college but instead I was blessed with memories, a wonderful Mimi and an earthly Father who I knew deep down understood my pain. As I reflect upon it now, I am the Mother. I welcome 2 boys home from college, albeit they are not too far away…they are growing into men. Do they have memories of magical Christmas seasons? Do they want to create those same memories one day with their families and talk of stories of HOME? But at the center of the story lies a very important piece…in both the commercial, and in my memory and memories I am making, there was a HOME! It was a HOME that consisted of a family who shared moments both good and bad and was rooted in love.

So the best part of waking up for that day and in those memories, was the HOME of family! Thank you, Lord Jesus, for the HOME of family that you created from the beginning.

Have a great day,
