confession & forgiveness

by Pastor Mark Jordan

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9, NIV)

Today’s verse connects two very important concepts: confession and forgiveness. We might not like confession, because it makes us feel vulnerable. Perhaps you’ve thought to yourself that God already knows everything anyway, so why confess? It isn’t that God doesn’t know, but He wants you to know that He knows. Confession reminds us that we are incapable of saving ourselves, and it also reminds us that we fall so short. Perfectly imperfect, right? Confession helps empty yourself of the junk you’re carrying around so you can be filled with God’s grace and mercy. This is where forgiveness comes in.

You are saved by God’s forgiving grace. The mercy of Jesus enters your heart, forgives your sin, and redeems your life. As today’s verse says, God not only forgives you, but He purifies you, too! Confession changes your status from sinner to saved. How about that?!

Will you take some time today to pray, confess your sin, and seek God’s forgiveness? He longs to give it to you! He longs to purify you, and claim you as His own.

Prayer: Dear Lord, I confess that I am a sinner in need of grace and mercy. Forgive me. Redeem me. Restore me. Set me for ministry in your creation. I pray this in the living name of Jesus. Amen.
