The Lord says:These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is based on merely human rules they have been taught.” (Isaiah 29:13, NIV)

Yesterday in worship at church at the well we explored the Christmas Carol, “O Come All Ye Faithful.” I read today’s verse while preparing for the message and it really gave me pause.

So often we talk about just coming to Jesus as though it’s all there is we have to do. Just a quick reading of Isaiah 29:13 provides caution, however, because we must be mindful of how we come to Jesus.

It is one thing to honor God with your mouth, but what about with your heart? There is a difference, you know. Even Jesus referenced this in Matthew 7:21-23 when He talked about those who will say they called Him Lord will be greeted with a stunning rebuke if He did not know them. And therein lies the struggle.

God doesn’t want you to pay lip service, because He paid for your salvation with His life. He wants your heart. Plain and simple. He wants you to be faithful to Him. And the reward? Well, I’m glad you asked, for just the carol says, He will make you joyful and triumphant.

It’s time to come. Will you?

Prayer: Dear Lord, I give you my heart. Please forgive me for the times I only give you words, hollow as they can be. Faithfully, and seeking triumph, I come to you. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
