I Am Coming Soon

by Pastor Mark Jordan

“‘[Jesus said,] Yes, I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.” (Revelation 22:20, NIV)

Tiffany and I attended a Christmas dinner with the church staff the other day. We left Mia at home under Ethan’s care. It was great to get away for a couple hours, but we know it can be a challenge for Mia anytime both of her parents are gone. We prepared her several hours in advance, and just as we were getting ready to leave, did as much of our end-of-day routine as possible. Ethan finished, including putting her to bed, but he shared she woke up crying about half-an-hour after falling asleep. He did a wonderful job of soothing her back to sleep. When we got home, we both went in and gave her a gentle kiss as though to reassure her that mommy and daddy were home.

The next morning, I awoke to Mia singing softly in her room a song she apparently was in process of writing. I have no idea how far she got, but she kept singing over and over, “Mommy, daddy, home.” I crept into her room, and was greeted with the sweetest smile and hug. She was relieved for sure, but delighted that her faith was rewarded.

Maybe you feel a little lonely, isolated right now. We all have a God-sized hole in us that can only be filled by the Lord. There is ample evidence all around that God hasn’t completely left us, but there are obvious times we need the reassurance that Jesus will return and set everything right. He promised He would, but we need those reminders and affirmations along the way (Matthew 28:20). For Mia, she rested with her brother and sang about that promise. We are called to do the same in worship — gathering, singing, learning, and inviting others to join us until our faith is rewarded and we are all gathered back to Him.

Jesus said He is coming again soon. If you need to be reminded of that, hear the invitation to come and gather with others who are waiting, too. Let’s pray, sing, and learn together, offering the invitations to others to come and do the same. And as Christmas rapidly approaches, let’s commit ourselves to that work right now!

Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

Prayer: Dear Lord, I know you are coming soon. Comfort me in those times when your definition, and my expectation, of soon don’t align, and I feel sad or scared. Help me to remember your promise to return, and offer invitations to others to come and do life together as we patiently wait for you in prayer and praise. I ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
