fellowship as a pillar

by Jen Manning

They were continually and faithfully devoting themselves to the instruction of the apostles, and to fellowship, to eating meals together and to prayers. (ACTS 2:42 AMP)

Today, we will focus on fellowship, and its importance in our obedient walk with God.

Acts is a historical record of the early church. Within it lays an outline of how we should interact with other believers.

Acts reminds us of the importance of fellowship with our church family. That’s right — we are a family. We are more than acquaintances who meet only in passing on Sunday mornings. Acts stresses that fellowship is a continual and faithful process. Furthermore, fellowship should include sharing meals together.

Our church promotes fellowship with opportunities to share meals regularly. Each week, we break bread together on Wednesday nights. On the first Sunday of each month, we have time to share in a church-wide potluck lunch held right after the 11am church service. These are some simple fellowship opportunities.

Want to learn more about them? Be sure you are connected to your church family. Do you receive emails from the church each week? Have you signed up to receive prayer requests? Do you have Facebook? Twitter? Have you bookmarked the church webpage, so that you receive friendly reminders, photos and updates about the life of the church?

Most of the New Testament is a series of letters written by various authors (mostly Paul) to particular churches giving greetings, encouragement and guidance. It probably took months for the churches to receive news. Those letters passed on prayers and instruction that directed the bride of Christ known as the church.

Fortunately, we don’t have to wait months in a time of near-instant communication. Our letters from Paul come in the form of the emails and messages the church sends to its family. You willalways find up-to-date information and communication that allows you to be an active participant in our family’s fellowship. The church needs you to make fellowship a pillar for your life, so you can be a pillar for the church.

Come worship, serve, share and fellowship. We are called to do life together.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for providing me an outline for how I should live. Sometimes your word seems foolish to the world. You have called us to fellowship to have better lives and relationships. Thank you for loving me and providing me with opportunities to fellowship. Amen.
