Keep the Lamp High

By Pastor Mark Jordan

“You are the light of the world. A city on top of a hill can’t be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they put it on top of a lampstand, and it shines on all who are in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before people, so they can see the good things you do and praise your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16, CEB)

Tiffany recently bought a suspended lamp for our living room to help illuminate a corner. She and Ethan used some hooks to hang it, and the look is perfect. They actually placed it in front of a mirror, so the light reflects even more brilliantly.

I am almost always the first one up in the morning, and one day, when I went to the family room, I noticed the lamp was sagging. I tried and tried to get the lamp to stay in it’s preferred position, but was unable. I installed another hook, right at the control switch, to hold the lamp in place. It worked perfectly, and now the light shines for all to see.

Tiffany and I discussed this shortly thereafter, and I shared how it reminded me of the passage I chose for today’s Daily Water. As Jesus taught in the Sermon on the Mount, He mentioned how a person doesn’t light a lamp and then intentionally hide it under a basket. That makes great sense. But what if the hiding of the light isn’t intentional, but due to the effects of life that either obscure or extinguish it? When that is the case, you must get back to control.

One of the things I learned from studying psychology is the impact of feeling out of control can have on a person. It is demoralizing and debilitating. But what if I told you it doesn’t have to be? As a Jesus follower, it is important to remember that He is in control. Yes, there will be times when it doesn’t look, feel, or seem like it, but He is. Think about Christ’s languishing march to Calvary…that certainly looked like defeat, but in it was the greatest victory of all! This requires faith to know that God is saving you, even when it feels like life is suffocating you.

if you feel like your light is dimming, let Jesus grab hold and take control. He will comfort you when you are down, and challenge you when it feels like you are in charge. As you shine your light, keep it high, and use it to point others to the Lord. Don’t hide it intentionally, or let outside forces obscure it’s glow, but let your light shine so everyone can see the good things you, do and praise your Father who is in heaven.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for sharing your light with me. Forgive me for the times I think the light is mine alone to shine, because it’s in those times I am subject to having my light dimmed. Help me to know that the light I shine is that of the true Light of the World — your Son, and my Savior Jesus. I shine and lift this prayer in His name. Amen.
