For National Sticky Bun Day

by Pastor Mark Jordan

“Your word is so pleasing to my taste buds— it’s sweeter than honey in my mouth!” (Psalm 119:103, CEB)

Today is National Sticky Bun Day…did you even know there was such a thing? This is from the National Day Calendar website: “Known as ‘schnecke’ meaning snail, the sticky bun is rolled into a sweet spiral that resembles its German name. Still considered to be a Pennsylvania specialty, it is believed the sticky bun’s origin in the United States began in the 19th century. German settlers brought their baking traditions with them when they began settling in and around Philadelphia.”

I have to be honest, I love pastries, but don’t eat them very often. I over-indulged in my younger days, and kinda burned out on them. Still, every now and then, when we have some at the house, I like to heat up one and savor the sweetness. There is something so good about the ooey-gooey deliciousness.

As good as a sticky bun is, Scripture tells us it cannot compare to the goodness of God. As today’s verse tells us, God’s word is sweeter to the mouth than honey. Imagine that! This brings to my mind Psalm 34:8 where we read, “Taste and see how good the Lord is! The one who takes refuge in him is truly happy” (CEB)!

Let the sweetness of God’s good word tantalize your taste buds. Don’t move slowly like a snail to the source, but savor the Savior and take refuge in Him! You’ll never grow tired of it, I promise.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for the sweetness of your word. I  have tasted and seen just how good it is, and choose to take refuge in you. Forgive me for moving slowly to you, and help me to feel the eternal energy that comes from savoring the love of my Savior. I pray this in Jesus’ name, amen.
