no longer a visitor

by Pastor Mark Jordan

“Blessed is the Lord God of Israel, for He has visited and redeemed His people…” (Luke 1:68, NKJV)

Today’s verse comes from Zechariah’s prophecy about who was still to come. Contextually, in today’s verse, Jesus was not yet born, but he was just weeks away. Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist, knew his son would prepare the way for the Lord. As Zechariah started his prophecy, he mentioned about how God visited His people to redeem them. Things were about to change, though.

Just a few months after John the Baptist’s birth, Jesus was born. Friends, that changed everything! For now, God wasn’t just coming to visit people in order to redeem them, He was coming to earth to live.

The Gospel of John (written by a different John) referenced how John the Baptist came to pave the way for Jesus. As the Gospel writer, John started, God came in Jesus to dwell in the flesh with His people. I love how The Message version states this; check it out: The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood” (John 1:14). God was no longer just coming to visit, but to live. In Jesus, God was no longer a visitor, but a resident!

God wants to live here, still. Until He returns to bring us a new heaven and earth, His home of choice is your heart. Will you make room there for Jesus this Christmas?

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for coming to and for me. Where in the past you came to visit, now you are here to live. I ask that you to take up residence in my heart, so I may know my home is being prepared in heaven. I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
